MONDAY January 29— The Russian onslaught on Finland seems to have broken down, the aggressors’ attacks becoming generally weaker. A Russian submarine is destroyed in a Finnish minefield. More than 100 Polish airmen join the Royal Air Force. A naval construction race is reported in both Britain and Germany where large battleships are being built. Heavy rain on the Western Front turns the battlefields into a muddy quagmire. Air activity is restricted, but patrols are active on No Man’s Land. The advance . party of the first echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force is reported to have arrived at its destination preparatory to final training. TUESDAY January" 30-— German bombers begin a largescale campaign of unrestricted bombing on merchantmen in the North Sea. The bitter winter disorganises transport services in Britain, where there is unprecedented suffering. Large Allied Forces are reported in the Near East, where Britain and France are pledged to assist Turkey. The Finnish Army takes the initiative in the fighting 'by the Mannerheim line, which has been intensified.
Harrowing stories are told of the brutalities of the Russian airmen.
The utmost savagery prevails in conquered Poland, the Germans apparently starting a systematic extermination of the Poles.
