CLOTHIER SHIELD

GOLDFIELDS BOWLING TROPHY WIN FOR WAIHI TEAM Instead of holding a rota of interclub matches to decide the holders of the Clothier Shield, the most important trophy of the Goldfields Bowling Association, it was recently decided to hold an annual one-day tournament on Anniversary Day, to be played either at Te Aroha or Paeroa.

This year the tournament took place at Te Aroha, when 16 teams took part in the competition. These included two from Paeroa and two from Hikutaia. The Paeroa teams were Cane, Allen, Bowmar and Williams who had three wins and two losses and Morrison, Turnbull, Gibb

and Taylor, which had two wins and three losses. Weedon, Lindsay, Markovich and Baird (Hikutaia), had two wins and tw r o losses, and Bax, Lowry, W. Morrison and Elliott (Hikutaia), five losses. Two rinks from the Thames Club were skipped respectively by ,F. Adamson and W. Gorden. The former won 35 games and the latter 2.

Five games were played, although rain held up play until 11 a.m., and the time allowance had to be curtailed.

At the conclusion of the fifth game it was found that Barnes (Te Aroha) and McGonagle (Waihi) each had 4B wins, so these two teams played for one hour to decide the issue. Barnes was the winner of the competition last year and quite a large gathering witnessed the game. Scoring was low and even for the first half, then McGonagle gradually drew away from Bairnes and eventually won by 13 to 6. The shield will therefore be held by Waihi for the 194041 season.

The win of McGonagle, who is one of the best-known enthusiasts of the game, and his team was a very popular one and was loudly applauded when the final bowl was' played.
