FORTY YEARS AGO
SIX TO STAND ELECTION CANDIDATES TWO PARTIES REPRESENTED ('From the Ohiiiemuri Gazette of November 15, 1899.) The names of the candidates definitely out for Ohinemuri are Messrs De Bakker, Colclough, McCullough, Palmer, Shera and Moss, a plentitude of choice surely. And yet, virtually there is no choice. • They are all members of the Liberal party and supporters of! the Seddon Government. It will be a mere matter of a perplexing preference for a personality. It seems marvellous' to' us that no Opposition candidate' has ; shown himself, so as to make the contest a little interesting. It certainly, looks now' as though it will be a prohibitionist or anti-prohibitionist affair, and on these lines will be a very close thing. Waihi, Te Aroha and Parawai are strong on no licences and there are not a few elsewhere in the district. It is a pity that it should be upon this issue we shall have to vote, but it looks decidedly like it.
