NOXIOUS WEEDS
POSITION ON THE PLAINS
LITTLE STRAYING CATTLE
“ During the month of October, 157 farms were visited in various parts of the county,” reported Mr W. Chapman, noxious weeds inspector, to Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. “ The ragwort is not showing up at the present time,” continued the report, ‘‘and farmers are concentrating more on the young plants. They certainly deserve congratulations for the way they are handling the weed. Hemlock is beginning to show up but not in very great quantities; foxglove so far has not made its appearance. The blackberries generally are being attended to. The three men on noxious weeds have finished, the Maori section at Kerepeehi and also cleared up the waste land around Turua. They are now working at Netherton on the stop-bank opposite Morrison’s, and they will spray the blackberries around the Netherton Domain after completion of the stopbank. As requested after last meeting the matter of rubbish on the roadside has been attended to and I think it has been cleared up.
On October 14 one cow was released from the Ngatea pound on payment of fees, 31s 6d. On October 10 I attended Court at Thames in connection with a case of straying cattle and the offender was convicted and fined £1 and costs. Since that time he has given very little trouble. “During the month there were only two cases of straying cattle that came under my notice, these being treated as accidental and warnings given in each case.”
