Plains Schools Sports Arrangements for the Hauraki Plains Schools Sports Association’s annual sports meeting are now well in train. The school grounds and approach at Ngatea are being prepared for the sports which will be held on Thursday, April 6—the day before the Easter holidays commence. Hospital Board Vacancy At a special meeting of the Waihi Borough Council on Monday evening, Cr. J. G. Cornes was unanimously appointed as borough representative on the Thames Hospital Board to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr C. F. Butcher. There were no other nominations for the position.

Many Carpenters Employed To-day 565 carpenters were being employed on building houses in Welldrigton, stated Mr Jas. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, speaking at the opening of the State rental houses at Paeroa on Wednesday evening, yet that number was less than the number employed on erecting the Centennial buildings there.

Improvements To Dump A distinct improvement has been effected at the dump in Wood street by the Paeroa Borough Council consequent upon complaints made by residents. The dry grass constituting a fire menace has been cut and burned and the drain from the dump has been cleared. The deposits have been covered but a large number of flies and: insect pests still favour the spot. Athletics in Schools A suggestion that a coach should be obtained to visit secondary schools in the daytime was made by Mr B. Sutherland, speaking at a farewell gathering to Mr A. L. Fitch, coach to the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. He was prepared, he said, to guarantee the expenses of such a coach for a three years’ engagement. The coach could visit six schools a day for three-quarters of an hour each.

Effect of Import Control The Government’s import restrictions make themselves felt in the most unexpected quarters—even in the State’s own services. This was borne out at a meeting of the Otago Education Board this week, when the Education Department stated, in reply to an inquiry from the board in reference to film strip projectors for visual education, that the plan Which it hoped to have in operation early this year could not in the meantime be proceeded with because of the import restriction regulations.
