REGENT THEATRE

FEAST OF FILMS

TWO DOUBLE FEATURES

“THREE SMART GIRLS’-MONDAY

At the Regent Theatre to-night is the final screening of the double programme “Wedding Present,’" with Joan .Bennett and Cary Grant, and Lew Ayres and Gail Patrick in “Murder With Pictures,” and also the test match South Africa versus New Zealand.

On Saturday only will be screened “Our. Relations,” suggested by W. W. Jacobs’ internationally-known story, “The Money Box,” which gives Laurel and Hardy their greatest opportunity to exploit their specialised screen genius which has so highly entertained the world for the past ten years. First as respectable residents of a quiet-sea-port town, living a sedate life with their wives; then as their twin sailor brothers, reported to have been hanged for joining in a mutiny, and finally doubly being flashed on the screen, Laurel and Hardy in “Our Relations” keeps their audience in constant expectation of the stirring and funny adventures that beset them.

A group of mild-mannered film men sat in judgment of “George Winter” recently and calmly debated whether he should die or if he should be spared. Their decision cannot be disclosed, because it might spoil your enjoyment of “The Tenth Man,” one of the most intensely dramatic and enthralling pictures the Regent Theatre has screened for some time. It is showing on Saturday only. “Winter’s” judges were officials of 8.1. P., and they were debating whether John Lodge, who takes the part of the rascally financier, “George Winter,” in “The Tenth Man,” should meet his just deserts in the film, or whether the picture should be given a happy ending by showing “Winter” repenting and returning to his wife. Their decision you will have to see for yourself when you view the film, and we feel sure that you will agree with Lodge’s judges that the verdict they arrived at was a logical one and a good one.

Dainty Deanna Durbin, a brilliant and altogether charming- personality will be introduced to local movie fans on Monday when Universal’s gay comedy drama, “Three Smart Girls,” starts its three-day run at the Regent Theatre. Deanna’s voice has been heard previously on American radio broadcasts for many months. Surrounded by a cast of established cinema favourites including Binnie Barnes, Alice Brady, Ray Milland and Charles Winninger, this youthful newcomer to the screen lives up to advance notices of her musical genius. She proves, too, that she is much more than just a singing child prodigy. Possessing exquisite beauty and rare charm, the talented youngster gives a smooth performance. “Three Smart Girls” tells the amusing story of three daughters of a rich New Yorker who upset their father’s May-December romance with a gold-digging blonde. The title roles are played by little Miss Durbin, Nan Grey and Barbara Read.
