CHRISTMAS APPEAL

MAKOGAI LEPER STATION RESPONSE INCREASING YEARLY Mr P. J. Twomey, of the Christchurch Gas Company, has so far received £9OO in cash and several cases of goods for the lepers isolated at Makogai. The sympathy of the New Zealand people for these unfortunate patients is increasing year by year. When Mr Twomey made his first appeal in 1932 he received £44, in 1933 £144, in 1935 £260, in 1936 £565, and in 1937 £l3OO was received. There are nearly 600 patients to share these gifts. Last year the funds permitted each patient to have a present at Christmas and at Easter time. Besides this the bed-ridden patients were supplied with little extra comforts throughout the year to help them to bear their hard lot in life. / The appeal will continue for a little time longer, and when'it is finished it is hoped that the funds will allow of each patient receiving gifts and other comforts on the same scale as that of last year.
