RUN OF SUCCESS

BASKETBALL CLUB CONVENT OLD GIRLS TEAM OUTSTANDING RECORD OF WINS Outstanding in sports clubs’ records in Paeroa is that of the Convent Old Girls Basketball Club which has won the local association’s championship for the sixth year in succession, going through the season without suffering a defeat.

In the past five seasons, of which the records are available, Convent have been beaten upon only two occasions in that period—a truly remarkable record—and those games were in 1936. High School as Runners-Up. This team’s chief rivals throughout the history of the association have been High School Old Girls who have been runners-up on-every occasion except one, the year when Awaiti held that position. The records give the following performance of the Convent team :

To have played 52 matches, won 49, lost two and drawn one must be accounted a feat that would be unrivalled by any sports team in the Thames Valley, and possibly the Auckland province. Further Successes. In addition to gaining success in the Paeroa competitions this team competed in the Bishop Liston Cup series. —among the Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Matamata and Morrinsville church clubs, and secured the cup for the three years in which the trophy was in competition, 1933, 1934 and 1935, thus winning* it outright. No matches have been played in this series since, although the Paeroa club has offered to give the cup back for open competition among those church teams.

In addition to that run of success the • Convent Old Girls club has won the five-a-side tournament held at the opening of the season, for the four years in which that competition has been in existence. It is apparent from the foregoing that the team is looked upon as a formidable proposition in club and challenye matches.
