SHORTAGE OF BEER

A GOOD STRIKE BREAKER DARWIN WATERFRONT TROUBLE Darwin is experiencing a beer shortage. In this town probably more beer is consumed daily per head than at any other place in Australia. Beer is unobtainable in some hotels, and cigarette supplies have been exhausted. Private stocks are at a low ebb, and

one hotel, where bottled beer is still being served; is rationing issues to customers.

The month’s supply of bottle and draught beer was carried on to Singajore by the Marella, following the strike on the waterfront, and the return of the vessel during next weekend is keenly awaited. It is considered that the local shortage will probably be the deciding factor in preventing a recurrence of threatened further industrial trouble. The. beer and prizes for the Labour Day sports are

still on board, and as the holiday arrangements have been made, it is practically certain that the ship will be worked.

A further aftermath of the recent strike was the formation last night of the Darwin Chamber of Commerce,

comprising practically every section of the business community, including Chinese:. Speakers stated that traders had been penalised during the strike by the fact that there was no united body of business men.
