RATE COLLECTION

HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY SEALING TO KOPU BRIDGE RIDING REPRESENTATION. Subsidy on general rates for 193637 collected had been received and amounted to £1267 12s Id. The estimated collection from this source had been £llOO, reported the clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, to the Hauraki Plains County Council on Wednesday. Collection of rates since April 1 had been: Current £417 16s 9d; arrears, £2524 14s sd. The total sales of metal from the North road quarry since commencement of crushing had been £3054 15s 9d, representing 5200 cubic yards. Of this amount, £2172 6s 3d had been expended on county roads; £463 2s 6d sold to highways board; £9l to Waikato county in repairing Miranda road; £230 to the contractor on the state highway, and the balance £9B 7s, cash sales at the hopper. Tenders For Sealing. Monetary authority for sealing of Hauraki bridge approach had not yet been received, but on the advice of the district representative of the Main Highways Board, tenders had been called for the Job which includes portion of the Orongo-Netherton highway and was a total length of nearly 116 chains.

Mr Taylor advised that he was endeavouring to arrange finance for a further course of metal on the North end of Wani road and for this the council’s share would be £2OO. The clerk had assured Mr Taylor that the amount would be forthcoming when required. Pipiroa Bridge. The Main Highways Board has agreed to accept £5333 6s 8d as the council’s share of the cost of Pipiroa bridge, irrespective of cost. The council might wish to consider the question of sealing from Dalgety’s corner to Orongo simultaneously with the building of the bridge, and when this had been disposed of steps could be taken to arrange for finance. This could best be arranged through the Main Highways Board, repayments to commence after the repayment of existing advances, in about four years’ time.

The triennial county elections fall on May 1, 1938, and it would be necessary for the council to hold a meeting some time during this month to consider representation of ridings and adjustment of boundaries if necessary (section 60 of the Counties Act, 1920). Miranda Drainage. The dredge would be available in about a week for cleaning of Kairito canal, and Mr Taylor had been asked to transfer it there. 7 The department had consented to allow the use of the dredge for the payment of running costs, which Mr Taylor estimated would be about £2BO to complete the job. The amount available for this work and ordinary drain cleaning was about £320.

Drain cleaning would cost £l5O so that the account would be in debit at the end of the year by £l3O, but this would be overtaken by rates collected during the next two years without increase .
