WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
THE KOPUARAHI INSTITUTE. The Kopuarahi Women’s Institute held its seventh birthday in the Kopuarahi School on Wednesday, August 25. There was a good attendance of members and visitors from group institutes present. After a short business session the afternoon was spent in entertaining the visitors. The programme opened with the institute song. Two solos by Mrs K. Fox, a one-act play, “Deep Waters,” by Mrs McMillan and company, two recitations by Miss Duxfield; a play, “The Real Princess,” by the children; two solos by Mrs Marceau and a sketch, “Mary and Her Fat Mamma,” by Mrs Booker and Miss D. George. The bouquet of weeds competition was won by Mrs Attwood, with Mrs Young second. The best flower competition resulted: Mrs Braithwaite 1, Mrs A. Attwood 2. There were four members equal for first place in the aggregate points prize for the year, Mrs McMillan, Mrs Braithwaite, Miss G. Hale and Miss J. Field, and all were awarded a prize. The raffle, a baby’s outfit, was drawn and was won by Mrs H. Bowen. The president, Mrs McMillan, welcomed the visitors, and the representatives from other institutes suitably responded. The president and secretary were presented with bouquets by Miss Gracie Braithwaite. Miss M. Bowen, the youngest member, lit the candles on the birthday cake, and Mrs Goodhue of Turua, the oldest member, blew them out. The cake was cut by the president.
Afternoon tea was served and a pleasant afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
