LOCAL & GENERAL

Schools Re-open. Primary and secondary schools in Paeroa and on the Hauraki Plains reopened this morning for the commencement of the third term after a vacation extending for a fortnight. Visit To Rotorua. A friendly match against the Kahukura rugby team was played at Rotorua on Saturday by members of the West club, Paeroa. The visitors were defeated by 15 points to eight. The team remained in Rotorua for the week-end. Week-end Sports. No sports fixtures were held in Paeroa over the week-end except golf handicap and championship matches. Football was postponed except for a match at Rotorua between West and a local team, the basketball representatives were engaged. in a tournament, also at Rotorua, and no hockey matches were staged.

Basketball Tourney.

Members of the Paeroa Basketball association’s representative team which competed in the Rotorua tournament returned to-day. The team w<m three games, beating Waikato, Waipa and Cambridge, and lost two, to Napier and Hastings. Weather conditions were unfavourable and many matches had to be played indoors. Farm Labour Shortage. That shortage of farm labour can affect even a social gathering was mentioned by the vice-president of the Paeroa Orphans Club, Bro. E. Edwards, in apologising to the visitors from Onehunga for the small attendance on Saturday evening. Many of the members, he said, were farmers and because they could not get sufficient labour they had to work themselves. “They will be getting up to milk about the time we are going to bed,” he added.

Bobby Calf Trade.

An assurance that the Government was forwarding a scheme for controlling the sale of bobby calves was given at the meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial executive of the farmers’ union on Friday by Mr J. H. Furniss. Concern at the present unsatisfactory condition of the bobby calf business, was expressed by several delegates and Mr Furniss stated that he had been given a definite assurance that action would be taken by the Government next year. The Government’s scheme would set out that calves should be bought at the gate according to weight.

Power From the Earth.

A huge geyser near Larderello in Pisa is to be turned to good account by Italian engineers. A power-house is being built, and the geyser will drive four turbines, producing in all 48,000 kilowatts, the energy being used to drive electric trains. Very wonderful it is to think that the internal power of the earth is being harnessed in this way, and that buried forces which sometimes cause such terrible destruction of life and property when they break loose in the form of earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, should be tamed by man to do useful work.
