UNBEATEN RECORD

THE PAEROA SENIORS DEFEAT OF MANUKAU FIFTEEN TO ELEVEN BRIGHT DISPLAY IN LAST GAME. The Paeroa senior rugby representatives by defeating Manukau subunion at the domain on Saturday by 15 points to 11 preserved an unbeaten record for the season. Draws were played with Grafton early in the season and Thames in the Peace Cup challenge. Although considerably weakened through the absence of six players in the Thames Valley team the representatives put up a good showing. In the second spell, however, the visitors played more as a team and kept attacking strongly, the home side being hard put to it to keep them out. Bunting played a splendid game, and Silcock was badly missed when he retired. For a new-comer to senior ranks Towers worked well in the pack, Morrison playing a great game in the forward division with the McCormick brothers in strong support. The teams were: Manukau (red, yellow and blue): *"*E)unn; Glasgow, Osborne, Halsey; Dew, Wright; Norman; .Gunthorpe, Buchanan, Dillon, Kidd, Lindsay, Munroe, Milne, Chamberlain. Paeroa (green): Hanan; Bunting, Manders, Alley;' Miller, Pemberton; Silcock; Fitzgerald, H. McCormick, J. McCormick, Hampton, Morrison, Towers, Epps, Keppa. Ragged play characterised the opening of the game until Hampton made a dash. Play went to the visitors’ 25 where Keppa dived for the line only to be tackled. Bunting made a run up his wing, lost possession, but scored when the ball went over from a scramble. His kick at goal failed. Paeroa 3, Manukau 0. Play fluctuated, with Manukau scrambling through, a long kick causing Paeroa to force. A rush by the visitors caused Hanan to kick but he failed to find the line. Manders took a mark in a handy position. Following a long kick the home team went to Manukau’s 25 but lost ground. Near his 25 Manders secured and put in a good run for 60 yards, being forced into touch.' Hanan essayed a field goal,-the ball going a little astray. Offside play by Manukau gave Bunting a penalty kick well out, his kick Agoing over. Paeroa 6, Manukau 0. Within a few minutes Pemberton cross-kicked at his 25 and Bunting followed up, secured and raced through the opposition over half the length of the field for a great solo try near the posts. Manders’ kick failed. Paeroa 9, Manukau 0. The pace slackened in midfield until Paeroa penetrated but following an interception Osborne followed up a long kick and scored. Wright’s kick failed. Paeroa 9, Manukau 3. Greens were definitely on top and •after an attack Silcock broke through on the blind side for a really good solo try near touch. Bunting’s kick failed. Paeroa 12, Manukau 3. With the sun behind them the home attacked strongly in the second spell, Hampton making a dash. Fisher, who had gone on as winger, the other backs moving up a place ■through Silcock’s retirement, making a run and kicking for Morrison to follow up, but the visitors forced. Scrambling tactics enabled Manukau pierce a weakening defence until •TTre forwards rallied and took the ball to the 25. Morrison followed up a long kick only to be frustrated when Manukau kicked into touch-in-goal. At halfway the ball went through the backs . ;to Alley who passed back to Manders but he was forced into touch. Good tackling stopped a Manukau rush. An ■exchange of kicks reacted against the home side and S. Wright secured in the corner and ran round for a try behind the posts. Dunn converted. Paeroa 12, Manukau 8. The defence was caught again but Paeroa received a penalty on the line. A man in front caused a scrum to go .down and the visiting backs handled well, Osborne going over under the ' posts but being called back for a knock-on. Following a dash by Keppa to half-way Bunting carried on by dribbling and was awarded a penalty t r y when interfered with short of the line, apparently being certain to score. His kick failed. "Jl Paeroa 15, Manukau 8. rush by both forwards and backs with the latter handling well took play to the home line where Paeroa -forced. Alley broke away only to lose possession. The visiting backs were handling well, good tackling , by the

Paeroa team nullifying their efforts. A loose forward rush with the visiting pack showing great determination carried the ball into green’s territory and Halsey picked up and went across near touch. Dunn’s kick failed. Paeroa 15, Manukau 11. Paeroa was hard pressed in another loose forward rush, a force-down relieving. Towers led a sortie taking the home team to halfway and Manders was well collared when starting a run. Another loose rush took Manukau to the 25 where Dunn missed a penalty. Time was called with the score still: Paeroa 15, Manukau 11. Mr H. T. Grant was the referee. JUNIOR MATCH RESULT HIKUTAIA BEAT COMBINED SIDE The curtain-raiser was a junior match between Hikutaia and a combined; West and Convent Old Boys team. Verran was the referee. HAURAKI PLAINS COMPETITION NO MORE FOOTBALL THIS YEAR. The final of the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union’s junior knock-out competition on Saturday between United and Kerepeehi was won by Kerepeehi by default. Originally arranged to be played at Kaiaua as a curtain-raiser to the last Hauraki Plains v. Mangatawhiri match, the match was changed to Kerepeehi. Upon a protest from United it was decided to play the match at Ngatea. United was unable to raise a team on Saturday and thus forfeited to Kerepeehi. It is unlikely that any further football will be played on the Plains this season.
