SCHOOL YEAR ENDS

function at paeroa CERTIFICATES PRESENTED. Pupils and staff of the Paeroa District High School assembled in the Drill Hall yesterday afternoon for a brief “breaking-up” function at which certificates were presented. Addressing the gathering, the headmaster, Mr A. E. Day, said that the end of another year had arrived, and it was to be hoped that all the children were able to review it and its eleven months of work and able to say that they had achieved something useful and progressed along the road which brought honour to themselves and their parents. In congratulating those who had earned promotion, Mr Day expressed good wishes to those, who, through accident or illness, had not been able to make the same progress. . Speaking particularly to those who were assembling for the last time he pointed out that it was an important turning point in their lives, for they ■were going, out to make their own way in the world. There was a tendency at the present time to give too • much thought to pleasure and not enough to the serious side of life. Longfellow had said in one of his poems, “Life is real; life is earnest,” and another poet -had said: “We live in deeds, not in years.” It was what a person did that counted. The Prime Minister, Mr M. J. Savage, in his reply to a civic welcome at Auckland bn Monday, had said that his motto was “Service.” If the man in the highest position in the country could recognise that his duty was to serve, others would do well to follow such an example. There was a tendency to take without giving, and we could well learn that we can only take out . as we put in, and that the more we serve the better ~we will be. Concluding, Mr Day said that all ■ had done their work well in the year, and it was hoped that they would have a good holiday so that they would be able to return in six weeks’ time and settle down in earnest to another year of work. The chairman of the School Committee, the Rev. W. G. H. Weadon, endorsed the views of the headmaster. It was pleasing to hear that all children had done their best, for the success of the school. depended upon -'the efforts of the individual pupils. Yfo those who were not returning to school he expressed the hope that they would obtain positions in the town or elsewhere, where they would , be able to put into practice the pre- . cepts they had learned at school. He hoped that those who were leaving would join the Old Boys and Old Girls’ Association. Mr Weadon congratulated the headmaster and the staff of the school on their conscientious work, which had brought about such fine results, and observed that Paeroa was. fortunate in having such efficient teachers at its school. Some of them had been in Paeroa for a long time, and the longer they remained the more they were appreciated. He hoped that the teachers, as well as the children, would have a good holiday so that they would be able to .come back next February refreshed for another year of work. It was possible that with the return of the five-year-olds, there would be an increased staff, and possibly more school buildings in the coming year. Concluding, Mr Weadon expressed regret that Mr A. H. M. Farrell was ! not able to be present at the gathering for the School Committee had . wished to express its appreciation' of the great amount of work he had done for the school.
