Sales Tax Yield.—Sales tax collected in the Dominion during October totalled £219,537, the highest monthly yield since the tax came into operation in February, 1933. The previous month’s yield was exceeded by £19,237 and that for October, 1934, by £25,140.
The Maori Mind.—One of the greatest difficulties the old Maoris had was to .understand the European commercial methods. Canon Stack told of a Maori who had to make a payment of £3 to another man, but was prevented from doing so by the latter’s absence for three months. During that time the Maori had the trouble of minding the money, and of resisting the temptation to spend it. When the man to whom the payment was due arrived the Maori asked for interest for three months for minding the money.
