WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

NGATEA The monthly meeting of the Ngatea Women’s Institute was. held in the hall on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. E. ■Costello presiding over a good attendance.

Mrs. Jackson was appointed delegate on the Health Stamp Committee in place of Mrs. P. R. Wilkins. The condition of the piano was the subject of complaint and it was decided to write to the Hall Committee.

The competition was an article made from a sugar bag and was won by Mrs. Wheeler with Mrs. Keys- second. Mrs. Keys won a competition for the best darn in a stocking, Mrs. Wheeler being second. It was decided to drop the matter of a change in school uniforms as jt seemed impossible to arrive at any uniformity with any other dress. The question of a Christmas party for the children of members was brought up, and it was decided to have a Christmas tree with presents for children of nine years and under, and to organise treasure hunts for the older children. A sub-committee consisting of Mesdames Cook, Cotter, Darlington and Hallett was appointed to make the necessary arrangements. All children are to wear original hats, a prize to be given for the best, and members are to be levied 3d to provide ice ■cream. The roll call for December is a limerick on Institute members’ names.

At the conclusion of the business members were entertained by the Literary circle. The programme was opened by a pianoforte solo by Mrs. Mahoney this being followed by the reading of a paper on Brazil, by Miss Dale. A duet from “The Country Girl” was sung by Mesdames Hallett and Schulze. Miss H. Dale gave a recitation, Mrs. Wilkins a pianoforte solo and a paper on Norfolk Island was read by Mrs. Hlallett, the programme being concluded by the singing of a chorus from “The Country ■Girl.” Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Jackson, Justin and Lynch.
