BETTING CHANGE.
Licensing of Bookmakers
South Australia had bookmakers operating on its racecourses, along with the totalisator, at the Christmas meetings. For many years wagering by the latter means has been legal, and though betting by and with bookmakers has been contrary to law, it is common knowledge that it has taken place. One of the last Acts of Parliament before it went into recess was the passing of a, Bill to license bookmakers to operate on racecourses and also at registered offices. A Betting Board has been appointed to control bookmakers, and exhaustive regulations have been framed. Several score have been licensed.
