TRIBUTE TO PRIEST.
TEtE LATE FATHER DOHERTY.
COMMEMORATION SERVICE.
A wonderful tribute to the memory of the late Roman Catholic priest of the Parish of Paeroa, the Rev. Father Doherty, was the attendance of clergy and laity at the solemn requiem Mass held in St. Mary’s Church, Paeroa, yesterday morning. His Lordship. Bishop Liston and over thirty priests were present, one coming from as far as Opotiki, and the church was filled, a big proportion being local people who were not members of the Roman Catholic Church, but who were friends of the late parish priest. In addition there were present a number, of Catholics from Te Aroha, Waihi and Thames.
The celebrant of the Mass was the Rev. Father Bleakley, of Hamilton, the deacon was the new parish priest, the Rev. Father Hunt, the sub-deacon was the Rev. Father Lyons, of Huntly, and the master of ceremonies was the Rev. Father Forde, of Te Aroha. His Lordship Bishop Liston presided at the Mass and was assisted by the Rev. Father Dore, of Te Kuiti, and the Rev. Father O’Connor, of Frankton. The Mass was chanted by the choir of priests, and at the conclusion the Lord Bishop spoke of the life and work of the late priest and the sorrow of the parish at his sudden death, mentioning that the splendid attendance at the service was a fitting tribute to his memory.
