RELIEF SCHEME 4D.
ASSISTANCE FOR FARMERS
FARM CAMPS FOR SINGLE MEN.
Details of the latest relief of unemployment scheme, number 4D, were received in Paeroa last evening, and were made available at the Borough Council meeting by His Worship the Mayor, who is chairman of the Local Unemployment Committee. The scheme is aimed to assist those farmers who are in urgent need of labour for development work, but because of financial difficulties arb unable to take advantage of any of the older schemes. If, -however, says the explanatory letter, provision were made for the payment to farmers of a small weekly sum, say of 7/6 for each worker engaged in relief work so that the Cost of providing food could be met, there is little doubt that very large numbers of men at present engaged in relatively unproductive work, would be diverted to valuable employment, permanently increasing the production of primary products, and in addition, giving to relief workers themselves beneficial training in rural occupations. In manycases satisfactory accommodation could be provided by farmers if they received a ration allowance. In some cases provision would need to be made for shelter, perhaps by the utilisation of tents, which could be hired from the Public Works Department. On application and after approval single men will be drafted to farmers in parties of four. Food and accommodation must be provided by the farmer, but the Unemployment Board will hllow farmers 7/6 per week per worker. The workers will receive 10s per week if of 20 years of age, and 5s per week if between T 8 and 20 years. Engagements must not be for less than four or more than 26 weeks, and the work must be productive and hot the routine work of a farm. x In other respects the scheme closely resembles the other sections of the number four scheme.
