LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATIONS. INCREASED INTEREST. An encouraging sign of the interest being taken in the cost of local government in this country is ihe announcement of a movement to federate the activities of ratepayers’ associations throughout the country, says the “Dominion.” Local government during the years of prosperity had little interference or criticism from the ratepayers who footed the bills. Now that the ratepayers themselves are hard hit, a keener eye is being turned upon local government expenditure, and if this awakened vigilance can be organised the result should be all to the good. Muriicipal finance should be a local question, but it has become a national one owing to the enormous burden of local loans and taxation. A national federation of ratepayers should be able to give the problem the comprehensive study it calls for, work out solutions applicable to most cases, and possess the influence to enact them.
