FIRE PREVENTION.
.GENERAL CLEAN-UP WEEK. - - < DETAILS OF SCHEME. At the request of the Minister of Internal Affairs that the week, November 23rd to' he observed as Fire Prevention Week throughout the Dominion, the Paeroa Borough Council has agreed to co-operate and at the same time to have a general clean up of the borough. A committee of the Borough Council comprising the chairman of the Fire Council, Cr. E. Edwards, and the chairman of the Health Committee, Cr. W. E. Ward, have co-operated with the superintendent of the Paeroa Volunteer Fire Brigade, Mr W. Moore, and the deputy superintendent, Mr 11. Wilton, and finalised details. Commening on Tuesday there will be a general inspection of the business area for fire risks by the superintendent of the Fire Brigade, and the borough inspector. This will be continued on Wednesday and Thursday. Those business firms who have received “self inspection cards” will understand the nature of the inspection. For the purpose of removing any rubbish the Borough Council has agreed to make its carts available op Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Wednesday the main streets, from the Paeroa Hotel to the Convent, incluing the area along Station Road as far as the racecourse and back to the public school will be worked.
On Thursday the carts will work the area on the western side of the railway line Trom Junction Road to the Railway Station and in the neighbourhood of Le MAnquis, Lamb and Company’s mil), and on Friday the area covered will be the Taylor's Avenue, Hill Street, Kennedy Street and Rye Lane localities. The Volunteer Fire Brigade arc assisting in the fire prevention activities and the members will parade at the station in uniform each evening An inspection of the brigade and equipment will be made by the Mayor and the chairman of the Fire Council on Thursday night. A demonstration on fire attacking methods will be carried out on Tuesday evening nt Mr Master's shop and the Bank of New Zealand, commencing at 7 p.m. Any efforts in connection with the cleaning up work or fire prevention activities will be of little use, unless the citizens join in the movements, and the Mayor and Fire Brigade Council appeal to all business people and householders to enter into the spirit of the movement, and concentrate on a general clean up week.
“I was delighted to hear you sing the National Anthem as I came in, not only because it is a vocal expression of loyalty to the Crown, but because. as I expected, it was, on these premises a fine achievement of musical art,” said His Excellency, the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, to the boys of the Cathedral Grammar School (reports the Christchurch “Press”). “The National Anthem can so easily be murdered as a vocal effort “I have heard it so in the course of my journeys about the Dominion. When well done, it is a national song as inspiring and beautiful ns any in the world.”
