CYCLIST INJURED.
HORSES ON ROAD. COLLISION AT NIGHT. Straying animals, although not in this case the cause of a fatal collision, have again caused a painful accident to a motor cyclist. Plains roads on no night are entirely free from straying stock, and on Saturday even last, five horses wandering on Hauraki Road, were the means of involving Mr M. Martin, of Ngatea, in a collision in which he sustained a number of broken ribs, besides minor bruises and abrasions. The accident occurred about 1.30 on Sunday night, when MiMartin was returning to Ngatea from Thames. The horses were on the lower end of Hauraki Road, Turua, and were obscured by a particularly dark night. Mr Martin observed the first animal straight ahead of him in the roadway and swerved to avoid it. As he did so, another animal came up from the roadside an he struck it a glancing blow on the right shoulder. He was thrown from his machine, and one of the horses, frightened by the light-and the noise, galloped over his body, kicking him in the chest and breaking several ribs. When he was able to rise he walked along to the Turua township and received medical attention from Dr. Miller. He was conveyed home by a friend in a car. His cycle was not badly damaged, and it was found possible to move it away later in the day under its own power. Although not in a serious condition, Mr Martin’s injuries are nevettheless very'painful, and he will probably be incapacitated for a space of several weeks.
