Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1931. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Members of the Paeroa Bowling Club have been invited to the official opening of the Waikino B'owling Club’s green to-morrow. By resolution of the Council at last meeting parking in future will be prohibited on the public hall side of the main highway, approximate to the Waitakaruru Public Hall. The Plains County, in view of the large amount of sealed roads that will be a liability on the County in the future, decided at last meeting to purchase a small spraying machine for the application of emulsion for maintenance purposes. To-day, Friday, November 13th, -v efficiency scholars of all primary schools faced the first portion of their cxamii.ation papers. It is hoped that tco many children did not look to the date this morning before going to school; The Peka-peka .Road pump seems to be frequently the centre of electrical disturbances. Despite all precautions and all nosisble guards, the fuses burn more frequently than is usual. Any electrical disturbance of the atmosphere seems to affect machinery and wiring at the pump. The Paeroa Defence Rifle Club or.ons its season’s shooting on the local rifle range to-morrow at 2 p.m. All members are asked to attend, and special catering is made for local visitors end intending members. Shooting will be from 200 and 500 yards ranges

Ngaten business people, on account of the dust forming in the main street of the township at this time of the year and rendering their premises very ui.pleasant nt times, have applied tn the County Council. to have the priming cont of bitumen laid as soon as possible. It has been decided by the Council to ask the contractors to do this work at their earliest convenience. A “general clean up week” is proposed by the Paeroa Borough Council for the week after next. The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) mentioned at last evening’s Council meeting that it was many years since ‘a systematic clean op hnd been organised, and the provision of free cartage for rubbish was very desirable. Many houses had an ft cumulation of rubbish, w*hieh it would be desirable to have removed. The Borough Council drays could be made available. The Paeroa Borough Council’s Building Committee reported to the Council yesterday thliit tthe following applications had been received since last month, and permits have been granted, subject to compliance with By-laws: C. 11. Pascoe, to renovate dwelling, Queen Street, owned by Mrs A. P. Kennedy; A. T. Jones, to erect garage, Bennett Street; Miss A. Kenny, to erect garage, Bennett Street; W. N. Chamberlain, to erect garage, Hill Street, for Mr W. B. Clow; R. I. Roberts, to erect dwelling Station Road; Lee Bros., to glass in porch of dwelling, owned by* W. Bain, Arney Street; L. J. Roberts, to remove and re-erect shed foi’ G. E. Allen, Flora Street. The value of these permits amounts to £603 10s.

Maintenance work in general has received the usual attention, reported the Paeroa Borough Council’s Works Committee last evening. Fraser Street and part of Thorp Street has been reconstructed and sealed, thus completing the circuit to and from the butter factory. Concrete water channel has been laid in Wood Street •n the north-eastern side and the carriageway constructed to same and sealed, thus finishing off work to this area and effecting a great improvement to the school environs. Supplies of malerial are now being gathered for the annual work on main highways, and if given a continuance of fine weather this work will be proceeded with.

Attention is drawn to a visit to be made to Turua by an Auckland Dramatic Company, under the direction of a former Vicar of the Hauraki Plains (Rev. W. W. Averill). The entertainment will take the form of a play in three acts, entitled “The Arabian Nights.” The piece is to be featured at Turua on Thursday, November 19th, and free buses from all parts of the Plains will be run.

A lease of the Patetonga quarry property, belonging to the Hauraki Plains County, has been granted to Mr A. Baker, of Thames. On a recent inspection of the water supply on twenty farms within the Hauraki Plains water* supply area, 11 services were found to be leaking badly. The other nine were in reasonably good order. Signs are not wanting that farmers are adopting concentration methods fsays the “Whakatane Post”). One settler in the Whakatane district has e-.ected a notice over his front gate: Visitors at milking time not welcome. Commcicial travellers and insurance agents prohibited. A Plains man was making merry at a dance th'e othei- evening—the cause of the merriment was in his hip pocket—and as he wished to dance he found this a slight encumbrance. Being of a very trusting nature, he removed the from his pocket and handed it (a foolish thing to do at any time) to a stranger alongside him, saying: “Here, mate, hold this while I have a dance.” His “mate” was a policeman in plain clothes- (The curtain falls). , The Paeroa Borough Council’s Finance Committee reported last evening that during the month the revenue in the District Fund Account amounted to £1,368 19s. and the expenditure to £1,633 Is 3d, including £9OO 15s, interest and sinking funds on loans. The debit balance will amount to £l7 16s 9d, when accounts were paid.

The Plains County'lnspector reported to last meeting of the Council that on several occasions he had seen cars at the Netherton . Ferry, especially on the Hikutaia side, pulled up only just in time to prevent their going into the river. On his suggestion it was decided to place signs on the roadside indicating the approach to the ferry, the inspector and engineer being delegated to attend to the matter. Tar sealing operations have now extended, as far. as Netherton. Work is being carried out between Wilson’s Read corner and the school. “ Detour” signs send motorists round the Netherton back road. When the present section of road is completed the first priming coat will extend from the Kciepeehi corner to join the permanently sealed surface on Wilson’s Road—except between the Netherton ferry and the factory. Haunching has been begun near the Kerepeehi corner. •The popular pastime among Ngatca residents, old and young, at the present time, seems to be fishing for eels in roadside drains. Some g&od specimens are being obtained, too. One of the fishermen can almost be awarded professional honours, taking fourteen eels from one drain, with one linefi, in the space of a little over an hour. The difficulty, however, is having caught the cels, commented on their length and weight, to get rid of them. It can scarcely lie considered tidy to leaving them hanging for public inspection on a prominent notice hoard in the centre of the township. On Wednesday morning last, Armist’ee Day, a commemoration service was held in the Anglican Church, Turua “Elusive Charm” secured quickly by using famous Rachel Face Cream. Very popular.—S. J. Hedge, Chemist.*
