WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
NGATEA. COMPETITION AND CARDS. A very enjoyable evening was spent in the Ngatea Hall on Monday evening last, when the Women’s Institute held an evening of competitions, games and cards. This was the first effort of its kind by the Ngatea Institute, and was indeed a very creditable and successful evening. From a financial point of view the evening was also a success, over £6 being taken at the door. Building operations somewhat interfered with the amount of space available within the hall, but notwithstanding this fact the oard tables were suitably arranged, leaving a large space available for non card players While flag 500 was in progress, a number of competitions were held by the non-players. These were won as follows: — Poison stick: Mr M. Costello. Picture game: Miss McDonald and Mr Daly. This competition excited no little interest. A number of people were each given a card, on the back of which was written the name of an animal, and competitors had to draw the animal on the reverse side of the card. For the drawing competition Mr Daly was awarded the prize. Cards were then pinned on the wall, picture uppermost, and a competition, picking what the animals were supposed to be, was held. Miss MacDonald won this section of the game. Dart throwing was won by Mr Victor Birkenhead, with a score of 20 out of 30 possible. A competition in which the gentlemen dressed their partners in paper dresses and hats was won by Mr G. Birkenhead and Miss Una Birkenhead. Quoits was won by Miss Loaber and clock golf by Mr W. Leitch. A bottle filled with string presented the audience with, a knotty problem, the length being calculated by Mr C. Foster to within a inch and a half of the exact length. His prize was a beautifully iced cake. Flag 500 was won by Mesdames Olsen, Darlington, Motion and Miss Dalgety, The Indies then served a delightful supper and the evening closed with a number of dances, old time and modern.
