SOCCER.

GOLDFIELDS CUP. KEREPEEHI V. THAMES. In the match played at Thames between the Kerepeehi and Thames Soccer teams the former had the bad luck to lose by 2 goals to 0. Thames scored one goal in the finst 30 minutes of play but it was after the whistle had been blown for offside and was disallowed. iOakley scored one goal and Sharp headed the other in.. Galley made a good try with a penalty, but the goalie was too smart and saved hi good style. Of the two backs’Welch was the best. Yates on the left half was good. Blakeman hardly played up to his usual standard, but was good all the same. The outside left missed a lot of good chances. Oakley and Galley played up to their usual form, but Sharp, the inside left, was too selfish. The Kerepeehi team did very well, seeing that last time the teams met they got well beaten. Beagle, the goalie, was a bit too good in this match, and he had sheer hard luck in letting two through. Bushwell played well at centre-half, and Hands played better at inside-right than at outside, while McCullum played better outside. The whole team seems to be getting a better grip of the game, and should be somewhere in the running for the cup.. Thames found it a much harder and faster game than the previous one. Shilton was not playing, but he was doing good work on the line coaching the team. Mr Briggs Was referee. The curtain-raiser was played by the two B teams. They only had half an hour’s play, but were very evenly matched, Thames winning by one goal —unfortunately scored by one of their own men. However, it is by these mistakes that the younger teams learn, and they will be able to fight it out next week, as they will be able to play full time. Kerepeehi play Thames again at Thames on Saturday, the proceeds being given to charity.
