PIAKO RIVER IN FLOOD.
WATER HIGHEST AT NGARUA. NUMBER OF PIGS DROWNED. The Piako River is at present in flood, the waters having risen considerably higher than fpr some time past. It has been said that the drainage operations in the Awaiti have been instrumental in preventing a more serious flood.
The flooding is practically confined to the upper reaches of the river. Below Kerepeehi the water is not a great deal higher than usual. Nc extensive damage has been reported, but a number of pigs were said to have perished in the flood waters. STOCK SHELTER ON STOP-BANKS. The waters rose during the weekend, and a 'Large number of pigs and cattle on Mr Reuben Connor’s farm at Ngarua were driven to the shelter of the stop banks, where they obtained temporary refuge. It is said that the cattle were t.aken to a more substantial shelter by swimming l the animals across the river. About 200 pigs were reported to have succumbed. WHARF UNDER WATER. The wharf at Ngarua is completely submerged, being covered by about nine inches of water. The Lands Department officers state (that the water covering the low-lying lands at Kerepeehi is merely rain water, and the river has not overflowed in that area. The stop-banks there are quite dry. The flood waiters are now subsiding. Between. Rawerawe and Hopai there are signs of a flood, Duck Creek having apparently overflowed it.s banks. No damage is reported from this quarter.
