It is stated that the Salvation Army shelters no fewer than 1100 people nightly in the Dominion.
The annual meeting of the Ladies Croquet Club will be held in the library next Tuesday afternoon at 3,30 o’clock.
A, spirited game of football was held at Hikutaia on Saturday, between Hikutaia and Wharepoa teams, the latter, after a strenuous contest, being victorious by 30 to 10. Mr G. Collins refereedi.
The “Farmers’ Queen” is still going strong, ''quite a lot of interest being taken in the competiLen. A social and euchre tournament in aid of the funds will, be held at Netherton tomorrow night, and an “ ’.ardiup dance at Paeroa on Saturday night.
A mild sensation was caused at the Hikutaia stock sale yesterday when a frisky heifer suddenly turned and charged a prospective buyer. The crowd in the pen scattered in all directions and sought refuge on the rails.
Harness and furniture are the leading lines to be put up at the Paeroa Auction Mart on Friday. The sale starts at 1.30 n.m.
The official count pf the votes iccorded in connexion with the poll taken on August 31 by the Hauraki Plains County Council for the raising ofi a loan, of £31,000 wild be taken at the' County office, Ngatea, on Friday. Mails for -the Commonwealth of Australia, South Africa, and the East, per “Maheno” from Auckland, close at Paeroa on Friday, September 23, at 4.30 p.m.
Much-neeeded rain fell on the Hauraki Plains between Friday and yesterday morning, but untilf Monday night the rain was not what one might call, a veritable downpoui, but was mainly of a light, drizzling nature. Monday night’s rain, however, was very heavy and is sure ,to be greatly welcomed by the farming community.
The Thames correspondent at Thames has some interesting comments to make in his notes to-day in reference to the rate’s in the marine borough. He states that it is not uncommon for business people owning a 33-ft frontage in Pollen Street to have to pay £46 per annum in rates, and possessors of quarteracre sections £l5 in general and special rates. He wants to know the why and the wherefor.

Farmers are directed to ah advertisement relative 'to a veterinary demonstration on Friday. This will give an unequalled, opportunity of gaining practical knowledge .of how to treat certain ailments in cattle. The demonstrator, Mr Hardy, who is sent here by the N.Z. Dairy Association, is a fully qualified veterinarian and a speicalist in cattle complaints. There is no charge of any kind, and a large attendance is requested, as it will be many months before Mr Hardy can be spared to return to this district.
Many and varied are the expressions of appreciation of the Oh’inemuri Club made by visitors to Paeroa. A particularly handsome tribute was paid (paid in a double sense) by the visiting counsel engaged recently on the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Commission, in recognition of the courtesy extended to them by the Club. Their thanks took the form of a laudatory letter, accompanied by a cheque of five pounds as a donation to the Club’s funds.
