USEFUL INFORMATION.

FROM LOCAL COMPANY. / In tlie course of a circular letter the N.Z. Meat Packing and' Bacon. Co., Ltd., for whom Mr Geo. Sarjant (Paeroa) is local buyer, some interesting information in respect toHhe preparation and sale cf calf-skins is given, as follows : We are spot cash buyers of calfskins. It will pay you handsomely to get into touch with one of pur buyers or one of our branch offices in your district and get our price before disposing of your calf skins.' FARMER TO TANNER. We have orders from oversea tanners large enough to enable us p purchase the whole of the calf skins in New Zealand this season, so that through us you are dealing with the tanner direct, which fact enables us to give you the full benefit of the consumer’s price l . It will, therefore, pay you to dispose of your skins through us for cash. In selling direct to us you will save railages to the auction sales or markets, also heavy selling commission, and as all our purchases will be made in cash at time of delivery you .will , recognise the great advantages and extra profits that you will make'.

<New Zealand farmers generally have a fair knowledge of how't'o take skins off calves, but a considerable proportion of New Zealand skins are graded second quality or meaty, because of the lack of care in curing, or because too much meat is left rn the skin. Also a great number g;> slippy through being improperly cured, and by coming, into contact with mud and dirt.

The best method to follow, which, of course, will give you the best prices, is as follows : When you have skinned the calves, salt the skins well and stack them either pelt to pelt or by folding down 'the ‘backbone, but make sure that the salt is well rubbed into the pelt before stacking.-, This ensures a good cure, and by keeping .the hair side away from the pelt side the pelt is kept clean and white; this makes your skin more attractive, and consequently of more value. Be careful to keep mud and dirt right away from the skin. A 1 slippy skin is practically valueless, and n dirty skin, even if not slippy, has a very low value.

Stack your skins where the weather will not get at them.

Leave your skin in salt at least seven days. These are times when it is going to pay you do look after your calf skins carefully, so that you will get more money for them. We have outlets for all descriptions of calf skins, but a* the same time prefer buying good skins, well' cared for, 1 at top market prices. Save your calf skins carefully, save seller’s commissions, save railages, get sure returns on the spot. Get into touch with any of our buyers. The cash is waiting for you; Keep skins clean. Use clean salt.
