HUNTLY DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

ANNUAL MEETING Thv annual meeting of the Huntly District High School was held on Monday evening last, when a large gathering cf householders was preI sent for the election of officers for the ensuing year. The meeting was presided over by Mr George Smith (chairman). In his report to the householders. Mr.. Smith stated that steady progress had been made at the school. The roll number in the primary department now stood at 481, an increase of 25 for the first term of 1931. The secondary department roll number is 56, an increase of 22 on the first term of 1930. The total number on the roll in school is 537. Application has been made for an extra assistant and more accommodation. The Department has refused to supply extra assistance on the score of economy, but the question of accommodation is being considered. The committee consider that two more class-rooms are urgently required. At the request of Mr Scott, the committee decided to purchase six typewriters, in order that a commercial class could be taught in the secondary. department. The committee had to pay half the cost of typewriters but consider the money well spent. During the year, 1213 square yards of the playground was tar-sealed, and 661 yards reconditioned at a cost of £125 17s sd. The Education Board paid £74 and the committee had to find £sl 17s sd. About 2 acres more land has been acquired for the school, and it is proposed to utilise the labour of local unemployed in clearing this when ever possible. As a result of the committee’s representations, the Board has installed septic tanks at the school, thus relieving the school funds of nearly £3O a year in sanitary rates. The school has been successful in winning the Rugby and Soccer competitions. The dental clinic is not functioning so well as was expected, as the children are not getting the treatment that was promised at the introduction of the clinic, and the Department is now asking the committee to find more money towards the cost of the service, and suggest that a small charge might be made.

The co-operaticn of the head teacher and staff was very much appreciated in the raising of funds and outthanks are due to Mr Scott, especially, for theadvice he was always ready to give on school matters. At the election, held afterwards, for the committee, Mr G. Smith was again elected chairman. He then welcomed the new members to the committee and expressed the belief that all would work together for the good of the school. The following members were duly elected to the School Committee:— Messrs. G. Smith (chairman), J. W. Burgess, K. S. Caldwell, W. C. Davies, R. Henderson, B. Kinson, W. H. Ncrthmore, G. A. Shaw, A. Tither, J. Porteous (secretary).
