MINE FATALITY
MINER ASPHYXIATED FALL OF COAL AT ROTOWARO COMPANION SLIGHTLY HURT A fall of coal in the Rotowaro mine on Friday night last had fatal consequences, T\lr. Samuel Broadbent, a miner, aged 50, was killed and his companion, Mr. J. O’Brien, was injured. The fatality occurred when the night shift, consisting of about 13 men, was extracting pillar coal. Mr. Broadbent was working in his place with Mr. O’Brien when, without warning, the roof gave way, burying both men under a weight of coal. An alarm was given through the mine, and a party hastened to the scene of the accident. In a brief space of time the rescuers extricated both men, but Mr. Broadbent, who was found with a great weight of coal on his chest, was dead from asphyxiation. His companion, who was released by Mr. H. Henderson, a trucker, had been struck by flying debris and sustained an abrasion of one leg besides suffering from shock. Dr R. C. MacDairmaid was summoned and attended to the injuries.
