SATURDAY Two 1929 Super Specials “DREAM OF LOVE” (Joan Crawford) “THE RINGER” (by Edgar Wallace “HABEAS CORPUS” (Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy) The management of the Town Hall (the theatre that sets the standard) has much pleasure in presenting for your approval two 1929 super special attractions headed by a Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer latest super special entitled “Dream of Love” (the sensational French play) direct from the Majestic Theatre, Auckland, and starring the ever popular screen favourite, Joan Crawford, and directed by Fred Niblo, who made “Ben Hur.” It is a story of emotions and passions played in a most colourful setting. It tells of the love romance between a wandering gypsy maid, and the royal heir to a throne. They meet at a circus carnival, and after a night of love are parted by the inexorable law, w’hich says that a member of royalty cannot wed a commoner. How the status of each undergoes a change how’ they rise to heights of dramatic passion and sacrifice, makes a play of unusual power and charm. Nils Asther appears opposite Joan Ciawford in the brilliant film offering and the elaborate supporting cast in eludes Aileen Pringle, Carmel Myers. Warner Oland, Harry Myers and many others of note. Another screen triumph by the man who made “Ben Hur” —don’t miss it. The second big attraction to be shown is entitled “The Ringer,” by the famous author, Edgar Wallace. Thousands of people have read and enjoyed the book version of “The Ringer” and many thousands more have seen and enjoyed Maurice Moscovitch in 'the stage version, but for those who have already become acquainted with this play through these mediums, or for those who have not. the film version will be just as entertaining or even more so, on account of the wonderful acting by Leslii Faber as Dr. Lomond. Mr. Faber has been know’n in Eng land for some years as one of the fin ost actors on the English stage. The story concerns an amateui hunter of criminals, known as “The Ringer,” who has broken the law* ir. pursuit of his obsession, is wanted by , the police, but baffles their efforts t< secure him and vanishes. Dr. Lomond is called in to trace “The Ringer,” but he remains elusive. After episodes of ever-rising sus pense, in a crashing finale, “The Ringer” is revealed. A magnificent mystery story pack ed with thrills and surprises from start to finish, with the screen’s greatest actors and a brilliant supporting cast. The third attraction is an excellent comedy entitled “Habeas Corpus,’ starring Huntly’s favourite eomedi ans, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy They are a scream from beginning t( end. TUESDAY—WEDNESDAY Super Special “WHITE SHADOWS IN THE SOUTH SEAS/’ Thrilling adventure and haunting romance are strongly featured in tht new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer giant spectacle production “White Shadowsin the South Seas,” the thrilling supei special to be shown in the Town Hall on Tuesday and Wednseday. The plot is built on the regeneration of a white man, who after having sunk to the level of a beachcomber re-asserts himself to avenge a nativt pearl-diver, and as a result of his chivalry is lured on board a plague ship, lashed to the wheel and set adrift ' The ship wrecks on the reef of a trop ical island paradise, where after a series of thrilling and romantic ad ventures, he is adopted by a native tribe and wins the love of the chiefs . daughter. What happens when pearls are discovered on the island; his fight be- 1 tween greed and a desire for civilisation and his love for the native girl.. , forms a story of intense dramatic - appeal. Monte Blue plays the role of the ( white man. Opposite him is Raquel Torres, one of the sensational dramatic “finds.” A large group of native islanders supply an authentic atmos phere and some marvellous underwater scenes. None should miss seeing this thrilling picture. The supporting programme includes a sporting two-reeler entitled “The Scarlet Lady,” in technicolour.
