Tennis.

The Huntly Tennis Club at last managed to open its 1916-17 season on Saturday last. On the previous Saturday morning the officials postponed the opening on account of the sodden state of the ground, only to find bv the afternoon that the ground had dried, and was in splendid condition. On Friday last, the weather was perfect, and a fine Saturday was confidently predicted, but early on Saturday moiling rain fell and it looked as though the opening must again he postponed or abandoned. Then the weather again changed, and so it went on all day. Players were not to be deterred by the fickleness of the weather, however, and besides many local enthusiasts, a good number of players were present from Taupiri, Pukemiro and Hamilton. Considering the lateness of the season, the players were in splendid form, and a very good afternoon’s sport was thoroughly enjoyed. The ladies with their usual thoughtfulness provided afternoon tea. which helped considerably in making Iheday enjoyable. Towards evening, showers began to fall, but by this time most of the players had had a full day’s sport, and had gone home quite satisfied with the opening day of the season. Several ladies and gentlemen have signified their intention of joining the Club, and the season bids fair to be a far more s ?c----cessful one than was last season.
