Orange Service
On Sunday morning the members of the Orange Lodge marched to St. Paul’s church and attended the service of Matins. The Vicar preached from Matthew xxii. 21 (“ Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s. ”) and after having described the conception of ecclesiastical jurisdiction in early Christianity, when all National Churches possessed autonomy, proceeded to trace tlie development of the Papal view of universal juiisdiction. He strongly emphasised the distinction between the political and ecclesiastial spheres of jurisdiction and pointed out that in matters political, the Parliament of the country was the power ‘ ordained by r God. ’ It was wise, courageous and efficient or otherwise according as the people deserved. He urged the Orangemen to remember that their order was not a substitute for the church nor for religion. They had certain clearly defined objects to pursue which related to their private belief and conduct as well as to their services to the state. The faithful and efficient performance of the latter would necessarily depend upon their diligent attendance to the former. Faith in the All-sufficient Sacrifice of Jesus Christ was the only means of Salvation and only work inspired by their faith would meet with acceptance from God. During the service the choir sang the anthem “King of Kings. ”
