MEETING AT GREYMOUTH
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4th.
The monthly meeting of the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council was held ‘at the Borough Chambers at 7.30 p.m. There were present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Chairman), F. A. Kitehingham, J. Smeaton, A. R. Elcock, A. H. iUcKane, J. Kennedy, J. B. Kent, W. Clayton, J. Eder, G. E. Mitchell, K. O. May, D. J. Evans and Mrs Shallerass. Apologies were made for Messrs J. O’Brien, M.P., J. Mulcare, P. J. From Mayor of Runanga, acknowledging letter of sympathy respecting mining disastef.—Received. From \ National Patriotic Fund Board, Wellington, supplying statement of finances, and stating £IOO,OOO would be required -through the Provincial Patriotic Councils not later than March next.—Received. From same, supplying report of conference with board and Red Cross ■Society, and'drawing atterrtion_to suggestion of haying a liaison officer of the Joint Council on Provincial Council. —Received.
From same, regarding relief of sick and wounded, and money for rehabilitation, recommending two members of the Joint Council and two members of the Provincial Council, to decide as to border line cases; and stating a national policy was under' consideration, asking for particulars of cases locally.---Received. It was. decided tfc ask Mr Gillespie of the Joint Gounoil to be liaison officer on the Patriotic ■Council, and Messrs Whit-ford and Gillespie the two members of the Joint Council, to act with Messrs Perry and Evans in considering border line cases. From same, explaining Customs ruling for exemption from sales tax, which must he paid and a drawback claimed.—Received and noted. From Organiser, All Purposes Appeal, Wellington, giving particulars of the appeal, and printing matter available.—Received. From same, enquiring the position' regarding the proposed broadcast ap-! peal and progress reports.—Received, and information supplied. From Lady Galway Guild, Christchurch, acknowledging clothing, and stating the first consignment reached London early in October. —Received. From Minister of Defence, regret-
ting a tour of the Royal New Zealand
Air Force Bad was not practicable at present.—Received and secretary’s action in advising the Member iferp Westland approved. From Director of Broadcasting, replying consideration was given to plans? to improve the service for 'the West’ Coast area, but it is regretted it isnot possible to proceed with the work? owing to prevailing conditions. —Received and Mr O’Brien advised.
From Air Force Relations, Wellington, notifying more wool for the Air Force would be distributed and enquiring if the district could deal with 6lbs. monthly.—Received and centres to be advised.
From Greymouth Committee, Torwarding -£1238/13/9 for patriotic purposes distributed over different funds. —Received with thanks.
From same, recommending .'Mrs Sballcrass to represent the Women’s Branch on the Council.—Received and Mrs Sballcrass welcomed to the Council.
From same, suggesting steps to,-pro-vide quarters for entertaining West Coasters on leave in Christchurch. — Received and referred to the secretary.-
From Mayor of Rcss. proposal to substitute taxation for the voluntary system in raising fitnds for patriotic work. —Received and members to be supplied with a copy for consideration at next; meeting. General In connection with the proposed entertainment rtf men in camp at Burnham, Mr Evans was to consult the Welcome Club at 'Christchurch, and arrange for an evening before the holidays. The Westland Council with the assistance of ex-G’basters in Christchurch, will arrange the evening and entertain the men, followed by a social hour or two.
