Tl io keel of a super dreadnought, the “New Jersey,” lias been laid down at the Navy yard. The “New Jersey” is a sister ship to the. “lowa,” now under construction at Brooklyn. The, “New Jersey” will cost 93,000,000 dollars, and will be of 45,000 tons. The War Department lias placed an order for 144 million dollars worth of warplanes.
IJ.S.A.-CANADIAN SURVEY
MONTREAL, September 17
It is reported at Ottawa that the Canadian-United States Joint Defence Board has announced a decision to conduct an immediate elaborate survey of the west coast defences, including the North Western States, British Columbia, and Alaska. Canadian members of the Board will leave by air for the coast to-morrow for a tour of inspection; which will be the subject later of a full meeting on the- Pacific Coast.
FURTHER AID FOR BRITAIN
NEW YORK, September 17
The Washington correspondent of flip “New York 'limes” says: Two isolationist members of the Senate, Senators Clark and Holt, allege that Mr Roosevelt is negotiating for the transfer of half of the United States’ force of 59 flying-fortress bombers to Britain, in addition to torpedo-boats, and bomb sights.
Lord Lothian (British Ambassador) commented : “1 wish it were true.”
BIG BRITISH ORDER. DETROIT, September 17. The British Armaments Purchasing Board has awarded the Packard Motor Coy. an order for 6000 Rolls-Royce motors, at a cost of 125,000,000' dollars. . AN AUSTRALIAN ORDER, (Australian Press Association). MELBOURNE, September 17. The Australian War Cabinet decided to-day to purchase from America eleven P.B.Y. .flying boats at a cost- of one million pounds. Mr Mcnzics, Prime Minister,- said delivery of these was expected to begin before the end of, the year. These machines will take the place of 20 Sunderland flying boats that wore ordered in Britain last year, hut which were later handed to the British Government" as a Coastal"" Command unit. Each P.B.Y 7 . machine lias a maximum speed of 205 miles an hour, and carries a crew of six. They ’ are liighlv suited for long range patrols.
