HUGE EXPLOSION
POWDER PLANT BLOWN UP.

KENVIL (New Jersey), Sept. 12-.
A tcrriiie explosion shook the Hercules plant, as well as the immediate vicinity. Calls were sent out over a wide area for ambulances and first-aid squads. Every available fire-engine was rushed to the plant. The explosion was felt twenty miles away. The Hercules, one of the biggest powder manufacturers in the United States, has a number of plants, of which Kenvil was one. The company manufactures powder and dynamite fiir the Government. Many injured were sent to hospital. It is estimated that at least 51) were killed and 100 injured. The explosion did incalculable damage and will delay 17.000.000 dollars of British and American defence contracts. Thirty bodies have been recovered.
