Cable advice ha,s been, received of the death on active service of Pliot Officer Phillip Vartan youngest son of R. B. Vartan, secretary of the Dannevirke R.S.A., jand himself a veteran of the South African '‘'War. Pilot Vartan' was-22 years of age. Ho was horn at Daiinevirko and finished hi s schooling at the Dannevirke High School. Latef lie joined up with the H.B. Farmers’ Co-op. Assn., before proceeding to England in September', 1.938, on a short term commission in t<lie Royal Air Force. He.received liis wings about 12 months ago, and since then has been attached to the Coastal Command.
