COUSINS IN PROMISE SUIT

SYDNEY, June 20

A man told the District Court yesterday that a woman had asked him to marry her formally, so she could oolan £lO5 gratuity from her employers in England. He is Alister Walter Edmonds, public servant, of Penkivil Street, Bondi, who is being sued by Lila Gwendoline Miller, 31. of Anzae Parade, Kensington, tor alleged breach, of promise. Miller said that she and Edmonds were cousins. They, met for the lirst time when Edmonds visited England in May last year, although they had corresnonded for some years. They agreed to get married in Australia. and Miller, who was employed as a typist at the Royal Aircraft Department. gave notice and sailed foi Australia in November. Before sailing she received a cable from Edmonds, who bad returned to Australia, stating: “Urgent, necessity to cancel passage. Letter follows.’ At Bombay she received a letter from Edmonds, saying that bis economic prospects were “not so good.” and that he “had a return of bis aversion to the marriage tie.” f-'he replied: “Please don’t worrv. I understand perfectly. All 1 ask is that someone meet me.
