STUDENT SHOT
OXFORD UNIVERSITY
MURDER CHARGE FOLLOWS
LONDON, July 7.
Fellow students and senior members of the University attended Oxford City Police Court to-day, when a 19-vear-old undergraduate, describee! as “a good shot” and having been “a very enthusiastic 'member icif {his Officers’ Training Corps,” appeared on a murder charge. He was John Henry Fulljames, and be was accused of murdering by shooting a fellow undergraduate, Charles Frederick - Lorraine Moffat.
Mr E. G. Robey prosecuting, said Moffat was in the quadrangle of his college, having just left the' dining hall after l luncheon, when he was struck by two bullets: His friend Melrose and Cummings, the College messenger, went to his help and Melrose was wounded, and Cummings -was struck on the left shoe. Another student was injured in the leg. Four shots were fired in all.
The Dean, having heard the shots, went to the lodge and Fulljames approached and admitted to him that he was responsible for the shooting. Police officers went to Fulljames’ room overlooking the quadrangle 'iffld found ,n rifle which belonged to another under graduate, lying on top of a roll of - carpet which rested on a coal locker; The muzzle was pointing out of the window. Four empty cartridge cases were on the floor.
Fulljaemes, said Mr Robey, had been invited to dinner on the evening of the day the shooting occurred, and in a box in the porter’s lodge the police found a scaled note “written by Fulljames 45 minutes before the crime.” The note said: “Dear David,—Thank von very much for your invitation. T am sorry if von have ordered dinner but T am afraid I shan’t be able to come to Oriel. Probably an unforeseen and m-essing engagement will detain mo i'i durance vile. Still, iron bars, etc, or is it stone walls?” Pierre de Koek, one of the undergraduates who wore wounded, said ho and Denis G. Melrose were very friendlv with Moffat but not With Fulljames. The Rev. J.FT.fi. Wilde, Dean of the University College, said Fulljames told him, “I did ; it. I want to give myself tap.”
