Fines totalling i-od were imposed on Lancelot Goodger, horse breaker, when he appeared in the Te-Aroha Pol ice Court to answer 'charges of assault, resisting arrest, and acting in a disorderly manner in a public place while drunk. On the first two charges, Goodger pleaded not guilty and on the third guilty. Constable Parker said accused on. tered a restaurant owned by Mr V Mercep and proceeded to the kitchen, where he helped himself to aoirn food. When he went to a safe ioi more, Mrs Mercep endeavoured ti. prevent him, but he pushed her inti a corner. Mr Mercep asked Goodgei to leave the premises ( but lie would not go. so Mr Mercep informed the police Earlier in the evening Goodger ter rifled two employees of the Palaei Hotel when he led his horse througl the main entrance into tfne dinin', room and through to the kitchen. Afte persuasion by tlie licensee, Mr T. Mon oghan, Goodger left with the horse. “He may be able to get away wit! this stunt in Medicine Bend or soim ! other Wild West town, but it won’, [do here,” added Constable Parker. “When this man is sober he is quit-* j a. good citizen, and it is only when h< iis 'drunk that lie does such stupid ! things,” said Mr R. Sprague, J.P.. who was on the Bench with Mr W. T. Dale, J.P. “Fancy taking a horse into a hotel. It is simply ridiculous. I’’ 1 ’’
