TASMAN FLIGHT
AWARUA IN STORM.

AUCKLAND, July 11
The spectacle of a. violent storm at sea was seen from a new angle by passengers on the Tasman Empire Airways flying-boat Awarua during her crossing from Sydney to Auckland to-day. Commanded, by Captain Oscar Gat’d Op the machine completed her flight in 8hours 20 minutes, which established the, record time of 16 hours «i 3 minutes ••for/ the double trip. ■ When the flying-boat was three; hours out from Australia, il huge black storm front loomed up ahead. It is often:, possible to avoid a disturbancesuch a.s this by flying at a higher altitude, : but the dimensions of the froltt made this manoeuvre unsuccessful, and' the machine was brought down kg a height of several thousand feet. For about; half an hour bumpy conditions were experienced, and the ocean below could be seen whipped in a frenzy of spray, by the fierce wind that prevailed at sea level. ■■ It .addition to about 2301 b of mail and 701 b of freight, the Awarua passengers.' They included Mr L. J. Schmitt secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce/ F. R. Picot, Director of the Interna] Marketing OQivision, and O. E. Critchley, Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand.
