WOMAN CHARGED

• FALSE PRETENCES. (Per Press Association—Copyright). CHRISTCHURCH, May .18. Emily Elizabeth Mouat, a. married woman, was charged with obtaining toys and clothing, valued at £6 12s from Beatli and Company, Ltd., on ‘December 22 ( 1939, by falsely representing that she was Emily Wall, living at 324 Barbadoes Street. She also appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing, on July 1, 1939, a pair of shoes valued at £2 ss, the property of Frances Alice Thomas. Detective-Sergeant F. Sinclair said that the accused had gone into Death’s and bought the goods under the name of her mother, “who was before the Court yesterdayj” Hler husband was receiving an invalidity pension of £l3 a month. Mr J., D. Hutchison, for the accused, said that she had given the name of her mother which was ’ also her . > own maiden name. She had intended to pay for. the. goods, but had been prevented from doing so by illness in the family. The accused was placed on probation lor two years, and was ordered not to go into a shop during the period without the consent of the Probation Officer. Repayment of £6 12s lOd was ordered'at £1 a month. No alteration was made to the order concerning the other charge, on which she had been ordered to come up for sentence within three years if called upon.
