OBITUARY
REAR-ADMIRAL BINGHAM. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LONDON, September 25. The death fyas occurred of RearAdmiral Edward Barry Stewart Bingham, V.C., 0.8. E. Rear-Admiral Bingham, who was born in 1881, was the third son of the fifth Baron Clanmorris. He sqrved during the European War, including the action in Jutland Bank, in which lie secured his YC. He served from 1914 to 1917, and was also mentioned to dispatches twice and decorated with the Order of the British Empire, and the Russian Order of St. Stanilas. He retired in 1932. MR. JOHN GARRATT. The death of Mr John Garratt, an early resident of Dunedin, occurred at Mayfield recently. MR, CARL LAEMMLE, SEN. ,NEW YORK, September 24.' The death has occurred of Mr Carl Laemmle, sen. Mr Carl Laemmle, sen., was one of the pioneers of the American film industry. He was born at Haupheim, Germany, in .1867, and was educated there, and went to the United States in 1884. He worked chiefly as a clerk for various New York and Chicago firms un,til 1906, when he opened a theatre in Chicago and founded the Laemmle Film Service. He was president of Universal Pictures Corporation until 1936.
