THEFT OF £3631
INSURANCE AGENT CHARGED. (Per Press Association.—Copyright;. AUCKLAND, September 7. Arrested on a warrant on a Motucka fruit farm on Sunday, August 20, Eric Stanley Watts, 37, an insurance agent, was charged on remand in the Police Court,' that, between June, 1938 ; and February, 1939, he stole sums of money amounting to £2722, belonging to Thomas Arthur Taylor, also on nine other charges that he stole from other persons sums ranging from £25 to £312. The total amount which the accused was charged with stealing was £3631. Several witnesses gave evidence. Some, cross-examined by Mr L. K. Munro, who appeared for Watts, said they did not see any insurance policies on which they advanced the money. Other witnesses said they expected a profit of twelve and a half per cent on the money they handed Watts.
Detective-Sergeant Walsh, in reply to Mr Munro, said that Watts had been very frank, and had given all possible help to the police. Watts pleaded guilty to all charges, and was committed by Mr McKean to the Supreme Court for sentence.
