WRESTLING
McCREADY v. JONES. West Coast wrestling enthusiasts will be glad of the opportunity on Friday) September 8, of renewing their acquaintance with Earl McCrcady, British Empire heavyweight wrestling champion, who stands higher than ever this year in the regard of all New Zealand followers of the sport, when he will contest a bout with Paul Jones at Greymouth Town Hall. . ;
McCready’s appearance will be all the more welcome because, lie will be matched with Paul Jones, an experienced wrestler of high standing, who can be depended upon to make McCrcady go his hardest. As McCrcady is now well on the way To a . century and a-half of; matches in '"tins'. ebuiitfyV. his.) special qualities, which he demonstrated every time he enters the ring, are fully recognised and only an opponent of exceptional qualifications can expect to stand up to him. Jones has reached the prominence which been his in world wrestling for the past ten years only because he has never stopped endeavouring to.perfect his wrestling, and his success lias also been largely due to the manner in which lie has mastered his specialty, the hook scissors hold. Although many other wi ostlers have tried this grip because of its effectiveness when properly applied, no others have been able to equal Jones’s use of it and once he has applied it there is no escape unless the victim manages to edge Lis way under the ropes or find some other subterfuge. McCrcady may be too shrewd to allow Jones to catch him with the hold, but, in that case, Jones has plenty of other measures to draw upon and he is nothing if not versatile. He is also prone to adopt, rugged measures and can use a wicked elbow jolt calculated to shake the toughest of opponents.
