ORGAN RECITAL

.MR A. E. PYWELL AT HOKITIKA

1 Rarely has an Hokitika audience had the pleasure of experiencing such a delightful recital as that which was heard in St. Andrew’s Scots’ Memorial Church on Tuesday evening. The new-ly-installed Estey organ was used, and its tone and quality were the subject of much admiration. The organist, Mr Arthur E. Pywcll, was loud in his praise of the instrument, and complimented those instrumental in obtaining it.

Mr E. B. C. Murray formally introduced Mr Pvwell, and stated that he was sure the audience would soon experience a feast of music.

Mr Pywcll soon dispelled any idea that these words were mere formality. and many flattering remarks were heard after the performance.

'Til spite of his youth (Mr Pywell is 19 years of age), he is a very versatile performer, has had very considerable experience, and has a great knowledge of organs. As stated in our columns, lie has' had nine months radio l work from the Empire Theatre, Dunedin; was for twelve months organist at St. Mary’s Church, Mornington, Dunedin: has given recitals irom the Civic Theatre. Christchurch, ami has played on all tlie biggest organs in the South Island.

His performance was all the more creditable when it is realised that he was introduced to this particular instrument at mid-day on Tuesday. Several residents of the town heard him play, and. prevailed upon him to give a recital in the evening. He consented, ancl with borrowed music, presented the 'audience with a. popular selection.

Those arranging the 'recital' were very fortunate in obtaining the assistance of vocalists, Mrs L. Graham, Hokitika, Miss Smith, Mr Smith, Mr K. Fehsenfelt, Mr A. Mosley, all of Greymouth, and Mr David McGill, of Christchurch, a well-known stage and radio artist.
