DUNEDIN, August 21.
A spirit of chivalry was put forward by counsel in the Police Court in extenuation of an assault on a taxidriver by Patrick Rogers of Kaitangata, a miner, aged 30. he alleging the driver had insulted a female companion.
The police stated it was an aggravated assault in disgraceful conditions. Accused and a woman had been drinking in a hotel till they were requested to leave on account of their boisterous conduct. In response to a call, the taximan arrived, and the pair embarked together with a suitcase containing liquor and a demijohn of beer. An argument arose during the drive over the fare, but the woman paid. The accused, objecting to a settlement, struck the driver, forcing him from his seat till he fell in the roadway. The taxi careered on, the accused jumping out, while the woman went over a bank with the car, sustain-
ing a skull fracture. Even after the accident, the accused persisted in his attacks.
The Magistrate inflicted a sentence of three weeks’ grol.
