LONDON, June 18,
The. Italian salvage ship, Artiglio, yesterday recovered gold and silver valued at £7300 from the liner Egypt, off Cape Ushant. The total treasure recovered to date amounts to £750,000. The Egypt, of 7941 gross tons, was sunk in a collision off Brest, on tne coast of France, during a fog on x,ee evening of May 20, 1922. Fifteen of the 38 passengers and 29 members of the crew of 80 were drowned. The collision occurred with appalling suddenness and panic-stricken Lascars rushed the boats. The vessel sank in 20 minutes.
Aboard the Egypt were five tons of gold and 45 tons of silver valued at £1,054,000. This included boxes of gold bars worth £674,000, boxes of gold coins worth £165,000, and loose bars of silver worth £215,000. At the time of the disaster salvage was thought to be out of the -question because of the depth of water defying the operation of any appliances that could be brought to'bear for the purpose, and the loss was borne by Lloyd’s underwriters.
