STATEMENT BY MR SAVAGE.

'(Per Press Association.—Copyright).

WELLINGTON, April 26

The Minister of Finance (Hon. W. Nash), will leave Wellington next Sunday night to catch tlie liner “Monterey” at Auckland on his way to London,-: cwhere he is to discuss, on behalf of the New Zealand Government, questions concerning the trade relationships between the Dominion and Britain,; in the light of various changes made recently. ‘ Another question that concerns his visit is that relating to the loan that is falling due at the end" of this year. He will , also exchange talks about defence. The Minister expects to return to.. New Zealand in July. / ■This, announcement was made by Rt. Hon v M. JV Savage, early 'this afternoon, following a special meeting of Cabinet.

7;' “The three questions that Mr Nash will discuss are so related that it is almost impossible to separate them.” said ; the, .Prime ' Minister; “and Mr Nash’S presence in England would be justified in discussing any one of them. -No: one-could say we should not have all;,.the: understanding- and appreciation of our mutual interests that we could hare.” .

.V. Mr Savage said he was to receive, that afternoon, the report from the Pacific Defence Conference, which has just cohcluded. It wculd not be much good to New Zealand if he simply, took this report and locked it up in his safe for twelve months.- The Government was anxious to' see it implemented as far as possible, and, though they had had every assistance from those who had been associated with the. work, the: Government” felt that the sooner they brought the personal touch into the matter, the better. “There are .a thousand .and one things 'involved in-the. question of defence,’’said, Mr Savage. “It involves, fcr ‘instance, the question of supplies of.all kinds, not only for New Zealand, but for Great Britain. We know what .the report of the Conference asks us to’do, and our job is to push on with it to the .utmost with the. principals-con-cerned. . .
