Three titles changed hands this evening at the opening of the New Zealand ,senioi swimming championships at the Invercargill Municipal Baths. P. lianan (Auckland), the holder, of the men’s . 100... yards freestylp championship, was beaten by R. Hatclnvel) (Wellington). L. Newell (Canterbury) the one mile , men’s free-style champion, (was beaten ,by A. T, 'IV Stokes (Canterbury) and P. S-, Mathieson . (Auckland), the 400 metres men’s, backstroke, champion, although he. finished an easy first, was dikqnalified fox incorrect turning, and the title went to C. Cliff (Canterbury). There were some thrilling finishes during the evening, and the standard of swimming was high, but, on the whole, the times were slower than at most recent championship meetings. This was accounted for, however, by the water, which is acknowledged to be slow. Five championship events were decided this evening. The first section of the men’s diving championship was also held, but the points awarded will not be announced until Saturday night. Following were tonight’s results: — 100 YARDS MEN’S FREESTYLE .
